1. Richie: Mike, I still have the Daily Bread that gave you and the NY City
boys a spot in the most popular rolling mag at the time. I gotta
say, the afro and the fish on that high ass ledge has always stuck
in my head mainly because I had never seen such a stylish fish on
such a tough obstacle. I also remember there was this thing on who
had better skaters, east or west coast. Can you give us a brief
description of what it was like for you back then, coming from a
city which had already produced some of the biggest names in
rollerblading?

MJ:It was sick coming up in NYC, besides the skaters that came

before us i had the illest skaters to skate with from my time. Fish,

Dustin, Boschi, Franco, etc. Growing up with them was like having

brothers who skated with you, it was the shit. The best thing about

growing up in NYC and being a skater is that we didnt sugar coat

anything. If you had wack style we made fun of you for it till you

got better, if you did a trick half ass we made fun of you. I think

thats was a good upbringing.

2. Richie: The name "Murda" on a skate product is pretty much a guarantee
that the product is innovative, stylish and great quality. Everyone
seems to love your taste in everything with you're name on it. How
much time do you spend with your sponsors working on your new shit?

MJ:I like to be as involved as i can be with anything my sponsors

make.. especially if it has my name on it hahaha. Since my first pro

skate ive been helping with everything. I feel if its really going

to be your pro whatever it is you should have as much of your

personality in that product. After all the kids are buying it

because its yours, i think buying something joe schmo made and

putting an atheletes name on it has nothing genuine about it.

3. Richie: Getting your own pro skate is an achievement that in
rollerblading symbolizes that one has "arrived". The 1st Murda skate
was in my mind, one of the most innovative skates ever(the Genesys),
which broke the mold of what a skate should be. I remember the GC
frame with no Anti Rocker wheels was a big "whuuut?" for lots of
skaters. Can you tell us a little on how the idea for this skate
came about?

MJ: Being that, that pro skate was my first skate. I couldnt really

have input on the boot itself, They have been planing that one for a

minute. But I got to create the logo, and designed the liner in it.

I loveeee to skate ledges, so i designed a h-block that would serve

the same purpose as wheels. As far as keeping your frame locked on

the rails but i wanted something that would allow me to slide faster

on ledges and not prevent me. So thats where the Murda Block came

into play.

4. Richie: Rolling has definitely come of age in the last decade. Styles are
more defined, and tricks are more solid than ever. Yet, just when
you think you've seen every variation for a simple soul grind, out
comes a Mike Johnson section that changes everyone's idea of what is
possible. You are by far one of the most tech rollers ever, but you
got tech while everyone was trying to go bigger like Shima and
Haffey. What inspired you to do something completely different and
say, fuck that drop off rail. I'm gonna go back to that knee high
curb in the park and I'm gonna kill the shit out of it?

MJ: HAHAHAHHHA i dunno. I guess its just one of those traits coming

up in NYC to be yourself. I just like to get nasty so i

do so.I dont like the idea of anyone who can do a topsoul or any

basic trick can go and do it off any crazy drop rail or kink rail

whatever it may be. Thats not skill thats being crazy,Ima do shit

that you have to be skating for like 5-10 years to do. I also want

to be in this industry for a long time.. and not just being a

company owner, I wanna be a skater. Doing all that big gap shit

takes its toll on your body. Gaps are cool but i rather see a cool

looking gap,like a cool obstacle or something. But throwing yourself

off a building or griding off something 3 stories i think its

nonsense.

5. Richie: So right now whats going on with you? I see you're on the road
with the Razors Pro Team. Whats the schedule like for you, Don,
Aragon and the boys? And are you guys filming for a new Razors
video?

MJ: Yeah were filming for the new Razors joint, its coming along good

so far..Im also filming for The Truth 2 as well. I just been going on

a lot of tours recently, its fun but you definitely miss home.

Sometimes im home for like a week out of the month, but this is the

life i choose. And as much as i dislike being away from home for too

long i really cant complain about being a pro i love it.

6. Richie:I gotta ask this.We're all waiting for the new Murda skate to be
released. We've seen some pics of some red Genesys boots, and some
people are assuming that cuz its a red boot, its Murda's. Whats up
with that? Are you working on a new boot mold for you're next Pro
Model, or will you stick with what you already like?

MJ: No that Red genesys is not my skate at all..MY next skate comes

out 2010 summer time.. were working on something new. I really cant

give away to many details, So stayed tuned for that.

7. Richie: We've seen some trailers of the new Truth 2 video coming from the
Brotherly Love boys in Philly.What can you tell us about it. Will
you be given a full section for it?

MJ: Yeah we been filming for a while.. that video is going to blow

peoples minds.. so many good skaters getting sections im excited for

it. The whole truth cast is all great friends so we have ill

chemistry with each other and thats always good for skating and

projects. Yes i will have a full section.

8. Richie: I remember Louie Zamora saying after watching the Icons video ,
"I saw Mike, and the shit he can do,...and its like the shit that I
wish I could do before I stopped skating a whole lot..I'm happy to
see him do that.." Coming from a rollerblading legend, how does this
make you feel???

MJ: HAHHAHAH Louie is like my brother, when i lived in Cali he would

come to my house all the time and kick it. It was funny hearing him

say that because i looked up to him so much coming up and still to

this day.You could look at his old sections now and still be like

damnnnnn! fucking sick.

9. Richie:We all know how "unpopular" rollerblading is in the mainstream.
We all know that its up to all of us to keep this industry a float.
But being one of the top Pro's how has this affected you in the last
few years?

MJ: It never really affected me at all. The only way skating has

changed in my eyes is from when i went am to pro. Now i get paid

more and i have many opportunities. Skating may be unpopular in some

peoples eyes but its all about respect. You could meet some dude

that does the weakest shit ever but if he has a personality that

makes your respect him as a person your going to respect what he

does regardless.

10. Richie: Finally, as you know many countries in Latin America are poor,
and in some cases, like in Costa Rica, where I grew up rollerblading
since the mid 90's, there has never been a skateshop which carries
skates for freestyle...ever! Threw this and many other adversities,
many kids have persevered and continue to do what they love. We now
have a huuuuge generation of young kids who are beginning to learn
more and more about our beloved activity. In my opinion its booming
more now, in Latin America, than in the late 90's.
What advice can you give to these kids all over Latin America who

look up to you and have no idea what to expect from rollerblading?

MJ: My advice is to obviously continue to do what you love to do, I

know in some cases it may be hard to buy skate products but

hopefully you guys have friends like i did and they can hook you up

with old skates or old parts etc. As far as what to "expect" from

skating, i wouldn't expect anything other then having fun and

getting a chance to turn pro, to see the world, Travel with your

friends, get many girls across the globe hahahaah, Partyyyy and live

a great life because you wanted to skate.

Richie: Thank you Mike for you're time. Let the boys you're traveling with
know that you guys are HEROES for many skaters in Latin America and
that even though you never hear much from skaters from Latin
America, we are always waiting to see new stuff from you guys and
support rollerblading 100%!! Any shout outs for anyone?

MJ: HAHah thanks for the interview man and the kind words i

appreciate it playboy!I wanna give a shout out to everyone who

skates and appreciates good skating and all my latin mamies ima come

get when i get there! hahahaah

1. Richie: Mike, todavia tengo la Daily Bread que te dio a ti y a los chicos de Nueva York un espacio en la revista mas popular del momento. Recuerdo muy bien tu foto con el afro, y un fishbrain en un muro de cemento bien alto y por el estilo que demostrastes en esa foto. Recuerdo que en esos dias habia un debate acerca de quien tenia mejores rollers: La costa este, o la costa oeste de la USA. Nos puedes dar una breve descripcion de como era la cosa antes, viniendo de una ciudad que ya habia producido unos de los nombres mas grandes en el rollerblading?

MJ: Fue increible salir de Nueva York. Ademas de los que vinieron antes que nosotros, tuve muchos buenos rollers con quien patinar: Fish, Dustin, Boschi, Franco, etc. Crecer con todos ellos fue como tener hermanos con quien patinar, fue lo maximo! Lo mejor de ser de Nueva York, y ser un skater es que nunca se endulzaba nada. Si tu estilo era malo, nos burlabamos de ti hasta que mejoraras. Si hacias un truco a medias, nos burlabamos de ti. Creo que fue una buena crianza.

2.Richie: El nombre "Murda" en un producto de patinar es casi que una garantia que el producto es inovador, con mucho estilo, y de gran calidad. Parece que a todos les gusta tu gusto en todo lo que lleva tu nombre. Cuanto tiempo pasas con tus patrocinadores trabajando en tus nuevas cosas?

MJ: Me gusta estar tan involucrado como pueda con cualquier producto que mis patrocinadores hagan...especialmente si tiene puesto mi nombre! Jajaja! Desde mi primer Patin Profesional(Razors MURDA Genesys 2003) eh estado ayudando con todo. Pienso que si va a ser tu pro "lo que sea", deberia tener mucha de tu personalidad en el producto. Despues de todo, los jovenes los compran porque es tuyo. Pienso que comprar algo que hizo "cualquiera" y solo le puso un nombre de de un atleta para vender no tiene nada genuino en el producto.

3. Richie: Cuando logras que una compañia produzca tu propio patin PRO, es un logro que en el Rollerblading simboliza que has llegado a la cima. El primer patin "MURDA" es en mi mente uno de los patines mas inovadores de la historia. Me parece que rompio el molde de lo que debia ser un patin. Recuerdo que el chasis de Ground Control que venia exclusivamente en el patin con un plastico en el centro en vez de ruedas antirockers causo una gran reaccion de "quuuueeeeee es eso???" para muchos rollers...Nos puedes hablar un poco de como surgio la idea del patin?

MJ: Pues, siendo ese mi primer patin pro, no tuve mucho que decir en la bota en si. Ellos(Razors) ya tenian esa bota planeada por un rato. Pero pude crear el Logo, y el botin interno. Me encaaaaaaaanta patinar muros de concreto, asi que se me ocurrio diseñar un H-BLOCK que tuviera el mismo proposito que las ruedas antirocker. Queria que me mantuviera encajado en barandas y tubos, pero queria algo que me permitiera deslizar mas rapido en concreto y no prevenirme deslizar. Asi que de ahi surge el "Murda Block".

4.Richie: Me parece que el rollerblading a madurado mucho en la ultima decada. Los estilos se ven mas definidos y los trucos se ven mas solidos que nunca. Pero, cuando uno piensa que que ya conoce o ha visto todas las variaciones para un Soul Grind, sale un video con una seccion de Mike Johnson que cambia por completo la perspectiva de todo lo que es posible. Definitivamente sos uno de los rollers mas tecnicos, pero tu lograstes llegar al nivel tecnico en el que estas mientras todos estaban tratando de hacer trucos mas grandes como Shima y Haffey. Que te inspiro a decir, "Al diablo con esa baranda asesina, me voy al parque a patinar el murito de cemento que me llega a la rodilla y hacerlos TRIZAS!!"??

MJ: JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA! Pues no se! Creo que es uno de esos rasgos de haber crecido en Nueva York, el ser tu mismo y hacer tu propia cosa. Me gusta ponerme loco, asi que lo hago. No me gusta para nada la idea de que alguien que sabe hacer un topsoul, lo haga en una baranda asesina, o una kink o lo que sea. Eso no es habilidad. Eso es ser un loco. Quiero hacer hacer cosas que para poder hacerlas tienes que tener como 5-10 años patinando. Tambien, quiero estar dentro de la industria del roller mucho tiempo....y no solo siendo dueño de empresas, si no tambien como patinador activo. Al hacer esos saltos por grandes gaps acabas con tu cuerpo. Los gaps y saltos son cool, pero prefiero ver uno como un obstaculo interesante o algo asi. Pero tirandose de un edificio o haciendo un truco en una baranda desde el tercer piso, creo que eso es una estupidez.

5. Richie: Cuentanos un poco de lo que haces en este momento. Veo que estas viajando con el equipo Pro de Razors. Como se ve el calendario para ti, Don Bambrick, Brian Aragon, y los demas muchachos? Sera que estan filmando para el nuevo video de Razors??

MJ: Si, estamos filmando para el nuevo video de Razors, y hasta ahora, todo esta saliendo bien...Tambien estoy filmando para "the Truth 2". Eh estado en muchas giras ultimamente, y es divertido, pero extraño mucho mi hogar. A veces estoy en casa por solo una semana en un mes..pero esta es la vida que escogi. Y por mas que me queje de no estar en casa siempre, en realidad no tengo porque quejarme. Amo ser un Pro!!

6. Richie: Tengo que preguntarte esto: Todos estamos anticipando el nuevo patin Murda de Razors. Hemos visto por ahi unas fotos de unos Genesys rojos y mucha gente asume que es el prototipo de tus patines solo porque son rojos. Que ondas con eso? Estas trabajando en un nuevo molde para tu nuevo patin, o te quedaras con lo que sabes que funciona?

MJ: No. Ese Genesys rojo no es mi bota para nada...Mi proximo patin saldra en el verano del 2010, y estamos trabajando en algo completamente nuevo. No puedo revelar muchos detalles en este momento, pero mantenganse atentos a eso.

7: Richie: Hemos visto unos trailers o cortos de lo que sera el nuevo video de The Truth 2 que saldra de la empresa de videos Brotherly Love en Philadelphia. Que nos puedes contar al respecto? Tendras una seccion entera en esta edicion?

MJ: Si, hemos estado filmando para ese video por un buen rato. Ese video va a impresionar mucho al publico...hay tantos buenos rollers, y estoy muy emocionado con esto. Todo el elenco de la pelicula se aprecia mucho como amigos, y hay mucha quimica y eso siempre es bueno para proyectos en el rolling. Y si...tendre mi propia seccion en ese video.

8. Richie: Recuerdo que despues de ver el video, "Icons" de Razors, Louie Zamora dijo, " Vi la seccion de Mike, y las cosas que puede hacer...y es lo que hubiera deseado poder hacer antes de dejar de patinar bastante..estoy feliz de verlo poder hacer todo eso."
Sabiendo que esto lo dice una de las mas grandes leyendas del deporte, como te hace sentir??

MJ: JAJAJAJAJA! Louie es como mi hermano! Cuando vivia en California, el venia a mi casa a cada rato! Me dio risa oirlo decir eso porque lo admire mucho cuando estaba empezando y aun lo admiro mucho. Todavia puedes ver una de las viejas secciones de Louie y decir "wooooooow! Increible!"

9. Richie: Todos sabemos que el rollerblading ha ido perdiendo popularidad en el ambito pop. Sabemos que esta en nuestras manos mantener la industria viva. Pero siendo uno de los Pros mas famosos, como te a afectado esto en los ultimos años?

MJ: En verdad, no me afecta tanto. Lo unico distinto en el rolling para mi fue cuando me converti en Pro. Ahora me pagan mas, y tengo mas oportunidades. Puede que el roller no sea tan popular en los ojos de mucha gente, pero se trata de respeto. Puedes conocer a una persona que no hace todo del todo bien, pero si tiene una personalidad que te hace respetarlo, entonces vas a respetar lo que hace, pase lo que pase.

10. Richie: Y por ultimo, como sabes, muchos paises en Latinoamerica sufren de pobreza, y en algunos casos, como en Costa Rica, de donde creci patinando, nunca exsistio, ni exsiste una tienda que venda patines para nuestro estilo...jamas! Entre esto, y otros obstaculos, muchos jovenes han perseverado y continuan haciendo lo que aman. Ahorita hay una enooorme generacion de nuevos rollers, muchos jovencito(a)s que estan aprendiendo mas de nuestra amada actividad. En mi opinion, hay mas "boom" ahorita que hace 10 años, por lo menos en Latinoamerica. Que consejo le darias a los jovenes por todo Latinoamerica que te admiran y no saben que esperar del rollerblading?

MJ: Mi consejo es que obviamente sigan haciendo lo que aman hacer. Se que a veces es dificil comprar patines, pero en ese caso, espero que tengan amigos como los que tuve yo que te ayudaban con patines viejos, o partes usadas, etc. En cuanto a que "esperar" del Rollerblading, pues diria que no esperes nada mas que divertirte y algun dia tener la oportunidad de llegar a ser un Pro, ver y viajar por el mundo y conseguir la mayor cantidad de chicas por todo el globo! Jajajaja! Partyyyyy!! y vivir una buena vida porque TU querias patinar.

Richie: Gracias Mike, por tu tiempo. Dile a los muchachos con quien estas viajando que son verdaderos HEROES para muchos rollers en Latinoamerica. Y aunque no se escucha mucho acerca de los rollers Latinos, nosotros siempre estamos siempre esperando ver nuevas cosas de su parte y apoyando el rollerblading al 100%!! Algunos saludos???
